Tree Planting Success

More Trees Planted in Dundee

On Saturday, October 24th, 23 new trees were planted on the east side of 50th Street between Leavenworth St. and Howard St.  The trees were planted along a chain link fence on the west side of Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.  The street had been lined with crabapple trees that flowered every spring but over the years most of these trees had reached the end of their lives and had to be removed.  A variety of new flowering trees and maples were planted as replacements.

Funds for the 23 trees were provided as part of the Midtown Neighborhood Alliance’s Re-Tree Midtown project.  Over 200 new trees have been planted in Dundee over the past 7 years as part of Re-Tree Midtown.

A special thanks to John Ransom, Adam Langdon, Mibby Schinzel, Tom Craig and his son William for taking time out of their Saturday morning to help plant the trees.  Because of their efforts, Dundee will once again have a tree-lined entrance to our neighborhood in the coming years.

New Walking Tour by Elias W.

We'd like to say "THANK YOU!" to Elias W. for refining DMPA's Walking Tour Map. Elias completed the project as a part of his high school Senior Project. He refined the old PDF by taking new, higher resolution photographs; by researching the sights in the Dundee Pictorial History book, he added/removed information to make the descriptions as accurate as possible; and removing outdated stops and adding new ones, such as the Dodge Street Subway.  

He also created a Google Maps version. He states, "When you look over the Google Maps version, the description is in the upper left-hand corner (click downward arrow next to text to see full explanation). Simply click on the red numbers to see the pictures and information pop-up on the map. You are able to zoom in and out in the bottom right-hand corner and can toggle between a generic map and satellite images by clicking "satellite" in the bottom left."

 

His goal was to provide the community with a tool that would promote exercise and historical knowledge of our wonderful neighborhood. Job well done!

Old Grandpa's Location Gets Much Needed Love

Have you driven down Underwood Ave and noticed that the Old Grandpa's store is gone? It happened overnight, didn't it? Well there are excited things happening. Here the details:

In Dundee development news, Grandpa’s Convenience Mart at 5018 Underwood will be razed and replaced with a three-story mixed use building. Construction is scheduled to begin this June which sets the project’s completion for late spring of 2016. During construction the sidewalk near the site will be closed and some parking stalls will be temporarily unavailable, but become usable again before the building is done. Compared to the building it replaces, the new mixed-use building will be taller and sit closer to the street. The façade materials will include red brick to match the historic Dundee aesthetic. The first floor retail space will be equipped to house two restaurants, the second floor will be a pediatric clinic, and the third will contain six apartments. Omaha Public Works is involved in part of the project that involves partial replacement of the adjacent alley. The owner is Red Brick, LLC, the architect is Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture, and the contractor is Boyd Jones Construction.
